THE TENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
ON THE MEDITERRANEAN COASTAL ENVIRONMENT
25-29
October 2011, Rhodes, Greece

WELCOME
The tenth bi-annual MEDCOAST conference in Rhodes marks the 20th year of efforts by a group of devoted people attached to the MEDCOAST ideals towards protection and better management of the coastal and marine areas in general and those of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea in particular. Since the first conference in 1993 (Antalya, Turkey), the MEDCOAST conference series on the Mediterranean Coastal Environment has moved around the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, visiting Taragona (Spain), Qawra (Malta), Antalya (Turkey), Ravenna (Italy), Kuşadası (Turkey), Alexandria (Egypt), Sochi (Russia) and Rhodes (Greece). The conference has been organized in every odd numbered year, regularly in the months of either October or November. With the 2-volume proceedings from the Rhodes conference, the total number of volumes of this very important source of information for the Mediterranean and the Black Sea coastal and marine issues increased to twenty-five (more than 16 000 pages in all).
Since the Antalya conference in 1993, ten events of the MEDCOAST’s “Mediterranean Coastal Environment” conference series have made this series a major international scientific and environmental meeting, focusing on the management of the coastal and sea areas and particularly those of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The last two conferences in Sochi and Rhodes were organised by the Mediterranean Coastal Foundation - an independent scientific NGO - that was created in September 2007 for pursuing all types of MEDCOAST activities. The bi-annual MEDCOAST conferences, together with four thematic workshops, one special conference and thirteen international training programs organised up to date, have contributed to the steady growth of a functional and effective ICM network for the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
The Rhodes conference coincides with important developments and initiatives that will certainly have significant impacts on further development of integrated coastal management experiences and practices in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea countries. One of these is the ICZM Protocol for the Mediterranean, the seventh protocol under the Barcelona Convention that entered into force in March 2011. The Action Plan to be pursued for implementation of the ICZM Protocol by the riparian states of the Mediterranean will be the subject of a special session organised within the conference program in collaboration with UNEP MAP PAP RAC. Another special session organised in collaboration with the Project Management Unit will discuss the goals and the interim results of a major GEF project for the Mediterranean – Med Partnership Project (UNEP/MAP GEF Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean LME). The third important initiative in progress is the ICZM project for the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (People for Ecosystem Based Governance in Assessing Sustainable Development of Ocean and Coast), already well known by the coastal community through its acronym PEGASO. This EU funded project brings together twenty-five specialized partners including the Mediterranean Coastal Foundation (MEDCOAST). The interim results of PEGASO project will be presented by the partner institutions in two successive plenary sessions.
We are confident to have another successful and enjoyable conference!
LOCATION
All activities of MEDCOAST 11 Conference will take place at the premises of the Aldemar Paradise Mare Hotel, Rhodes, Greece.
