In the opinion of  Medcoast NGO  members
INTRODUCING  A TAX FOR  THE BEACH WOULD LEAD TO A BETTER BEACH MANAGEMENT

During 27th June - 2nd July in Mamaia resort at Club Mediterranean, “The Fifth Traiining Course on Beach management in the Mediterranean and Black Sea” took place. Specialists from Turkey, UK, Belgium, Romania have discussed about the beach issues and the solutions to improve the beach management. Medcoast is a NGO, which have the headquarters in Turkey and members from fifteen European institutions. They have visited and analyzed the environmental problems of the Romanian beaches. Medcoast is an organization established in 1990 with the aim to improve the environmental quality of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Coast and the Seas. The course participants, Romanians and foreigners, have discussed about the beaches of their countries and created a proper framework of change experience. The main environmental problems, which they have perceived, are coastal erosion, water quality and litter on the beach.

In the framework of the press conference organized yesterday, the foreigner specialists have declared that the erosion has very strong effect on Mamaia beach. Another negative aspect they have seen was the presence of dogs on the beach. In Eforie beach, it could be noticed that the quantity of litter on the beach is low but it could be seen in the sand and the bathing water shard of bottles and rusty metals. Also presence of the buildings on the beach have perceived by the specialist and the participants. In Vama Veche, they noticed something unusually, presence of tents on the beach which spoiled the aesthetic of the beach. A solution discussed by the specialist was the tax which should be paid by the beach users. The results of the beach questionnaire survey done on the beach showed that the majorities of beach users agreed to introduce a tax for beach in order to improve their quality. They also have specified that in USA , beach tax is 2 USD, in Romania could be 30 000  up to 50 000 lei. In their opinion, money should be collected by the authority, which manage beaches, respective the Romanian Water Company. Yesterday in the press conference, it is specified that in many countries there is an separate authority which deal only with the beach management.
