THE REPORT OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME ONBEACH MANAGEMENT IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AND THE BLACK SEA9 -15 June 2003, Kusadasi, TURKEY
Sponsors
Background Beaches have been placed among the important coastal resources in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea due to ever-increasing demands from the recreation and tourism sectors. Improving the conditions of beaches and proper management of beach environments has become one of the key coastal management issues. The positive participant reaction to the First Training Workshop on Beach Management organised in 1995 in Erice, Italy, has led to the launch of the series within which this current training workshop was the sixth. The other four events were held in Gozo, Malta (1996), Varna, Bulgaria (1997), Valetta, Malta (1999) and Constanza, Romania (2000). The objective of the intensive, but high calibre, training workshop is to disseminate knowledge and to provide hands-on training on coastal management needs specific to beaches. In this connection, the management problems of the several local beaches were addressed as laboratory test cases during the sixth training workshop in Kusadasi, Turkey. The course also offers excellent opportunities for participants interested
in beach and coastal management to initiate valuable contacts with
fellow alumni and faculty working in a common area of interest within
the MEDCOAST Family. The training workshop series are designed to
be highly interactive and to include ample discussion time in an informal
and friendly atmosphere as well as to give a perspective to the region's
beach management problems by drawing on the participants' presentations
and experiences. The Sixth International Training Workshop on Beach Management in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea was held in Kusadasi, Turkey on 9 - 15 June 2003. Special reference was made to the following topics:
The training workshop, which was conducted in English, included invited lectures on each of the topics above, computer and audio-visual demonstrations, presentations by participants related to their countrys' beach amenities and related problems, trips to nearby Kusadasi beaches and field work on various issues for improvement of management, group discussions on the results of the fieldwork.
